Sharon Stone has spoken about her role playing the mother of a 1970s adult film star in Lovelace, an adaptation of a true story.

The Basic Instinct actress is almost unrecognisable as the character Dorothy Boreman, whose daughter Linda 'Lovelace' is controlled by her abusive husband and manager, Chuck Traynor.

"I'm an actor … I transform to play these parts. I'm not anything at all like that part and I'm not anything at all like this part," she said.

"But I think it's easier for people to relate me to a part where I'm more beautiful, because it's easier to accept beauty.

"One of the reasons that I took this part was because I think that parenting, mothering is such an extraordinary important aspect of our children, of our family life, but also because I think women's rights are so important and they're so in question all the time.

"And unless women's rights are championed, unless the education of women, women's rights, and parenting continues to flower, these kinds of things continue."

She added: "You know, it's funny, because when I played Basic Instinct, everyone thought I was playing something closer to myself. But in fact I totally transformed myself to play that character.

"It was more fun to continue to look glamorous and closer to that part – obviously I'm not going to go out and try to look more like this character Dorothy Boreman because I don't want to – but I learned how to look beautiful by playing the 'Basic Instinct' part."

As for what is next for the 55-year-old actress, Stone says she will just keep pursuing roles that intrigue her and knows they are more likely to be grandmothers than sex symbols.

"I'm a grown up lady with three children," she said.

"I feel certain that I'm going to play adult characters and mothers and ultimately grandmothers, whatever. I feel sure that I have gracefully surrendered the things of youth."

:: Lovelace goes on general release in the UK later this month.
