Crazy Horse Guitar player Frank 'Poncho' Sampedro: 'My Gut Informs Me That Is the Final Tour'

Crazy Horse guitar player Frank "Poncho" Sampedro has been actively playing with Neil Young for 45 yrs, however he is concerned their present world tour might be the very last one. "I only believe once it stops it's going to be kind of difficult to get it rolling once again," he claims on the phone from his home in Hawaii. "My gut informs me this is truly the last tour. I hate saying their ages, however I'm 64 and I'm the child of the music group. I really like playing and we are going to playing as good as we ever did, nevertheless at any time some thing could go straight down with any one of us."

Young and Crazy Horse have been touring heavily since last August, playing gigs that sometimes stretch beyond two-and-a-half hours. "Our shows are physical," says Poncho. "It takes a lot of energy to play that much. It just seems at some point something is going to break. I already had an operation on my thumb. Neil's wrist bugs him, and he has to tape it when he plays. You can't fool time. You can't count on this happening again in five years."

Whatever happens in the future, Neil Young and Crazy Horse have a long European tour in front of them. They just wrapped up a leg in Australia and New Zealand that featured some welcome additions to the setlist, including a ton of rare songs from Zuma and Re-ac-tor. Rolling Stone spoke with Poncho about the tour, his early days with Young and his long and tumultuous history as a key member of many of his backing bands.

When you guys toured last in America last year it was the same basic setlist night after night. What caused you to extend the show and break out so many rare songs when the tour his Australia?
It's funny you say the setlist is the same almost every night. When I came home from the tour, my girl picked me up and she had a new car. I said, "Let's listen to your sound system." She had Psychedelic Pill and we put on "Walk Like a Giant." I listened to it and said to her, "We don't play that song anything like that anymore."

So, they were still brand new songs. They were evolving and changing, and it was pretty interesting. Then all of a sudden, one day at rehearsal Neil said we should change up some of the older songs. We played one or two of them one night, and then all of a sudden he just played five of them in a row without stopping. He just ended one, started the other…We all looked at him like, "What the fuck are you playing man?"

We had no idea he was going to do that. We did rehearse "Prisoners of Rock & Roll," but we didn't really rehearse "Love To Burn" at all. He played it in the dressing room on a piano, and then called for it that night as the second song. That was, like, insane, especially since Neil made more mistakes on it than anybody else.

I loved seeing "Barstool Blues" in the setlist.
Oh, that was cool. We rehearsed that once at sound check. We didn't rehearse "Sedan Delivery" at all. We played it at rehearsals before the U.S. tour last summer and it was always kinda suckin'. When we played it live it was like we always played it. It was so much fun. We had a great time. "Danger Bird" was really cool. The only time we did that was sound check and Lake Tahoe.

Do you know what causes Neil to decide something like, "OK, tonight is the night for 'Barstool Blues?'"
I have no idea, but what I really felt is that on this tour we're not able to ride buses because the distances between places was too far apart. We had to fly, and that meant a lot of days off, and pretty easy going days. I think everybody was feeling too relaxed, so I thought Neil just pulled those songs out and said, "Let's shake it up. Let's see what we can do."

He also extended some of the shows by a full hour.
Tell me about it! [Laughs] What happened to "we're only going to play two hours?" [Laughs]

What was it like to play "Like a Hurricane" in a torrential downpour?

Oh, that was so crazy. It was raining off and on, kind of sprinkling all day there. Then we we started playing "Hurricane" and a torrential downpour came. I mean, literally the organ stopped working it got so wet. I had to play guitar on that song for the first time in history

All that gear took a hit. It almost looked like hail was falling. I was drenched, and I couldn't move because I was attached to the organ. Those guys got to take a step back and everyone was quickly covering all the amps. The monitor console got totally soaked. A lot of things stopped working. It was crazy, but it's not the first time that happened during that song. It's amazing.

I love that you're doing all those random songs off Re-ac-tor.
Yeah, we have a lot of songs. We had to eliminate a lot of the old songs to make way for new ones. Let me ask you a question. What do you think the people would rather hear: the new ones or just a show of the old stuff?

Unfortunately, I think most fans just want the old stuff. People react stronger to material they know, and it reminds them of their youth.
Right. Well, it's funny. In the middle of that five-song barrage [of obscure older songs] that Neil laid on us we took a little break and I heard someone in the audience yell out, "Play something we know!" [Laughs]

That's great. It would be so easy for you guys to play "Down By The River," "Rockin' in the Free World," "Cowgirl in the Sand" and the other hits every night, but to leave them out in favor of obscure 1980s stuff like "Opera Star" is pretty awesome.

Yeah. "Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze" came off pretty good. I think we played it better than ever. We've opened up every show of this tour with "Love and Only Love," but one night in Australia he started with "Powderfinger" and then went right into "Love to Burn." We'd never even played that with our guitars on once. Neil blew the first chorus. He played it wrong. I was going, "Shit, what are we going to do?" Then it played it wrong again! He didn't go back to the verse. He played the first chorus three times. He goes, "I was just trying to get it right."

You guys have a ton of shows coming up this summer in Europe. Do you think the setlist is going to keep changing around?
Well, I hope so. It's nice to pull songs out of a hat and just play them. It keeps the band on it's toes. In the beginning, it was a little shocking. They came just so fast. He did "Prisoners of Rock & Roll" and then started to do "Opera Star" right after it, and Ralph [Molina] was still playing a shuffle because we hadn't really stopped. It took us a minute to adjust. It was insane. But imagine if you were in the audience and you just saw this weird ending, which was a barrage of music, and another song just grew out of it. It was probably pretty cool.

That's the thing. When you come to see us, you really don't know what's going to happen. There's no pattern. We just kinda learned the changes and then the solos start happening. It could go anywhere.

Are you prepared to break out any song in the catalog? What if he calls for something really rare like "T-Bone?"
[Laughs] It's funny you say that.

Why?
Each and every evening prior to the show we do a singing warm up. We only perform scales together. Is actually truly more about being united as a group before we go out there than anything else. One evening Neil was on the keyboard and I stated to him, "We can always do 'Mashed Potatoes.' He was just like, "Oh yeah, we could do that."

I would like to speak to you about the distant previous right now. Were you a fan of Crazy Horse prior to you became a member of the band? Did you purchase Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere when it came out?

Oh yeah. I actually used the album cover for moving big fat hash joints. I applied to listen to them and state, "Gee, I hope I can play with all of them.

Controversy Comments of Bieber Anne Frank Comments

Justin Bieber has said he hopes Anne Frank "would have been a belieber", after visiting the museum at the Holocaust victim's former home.

The Canadian popstar has received widespread criticism for the comments, which he wrote in the guestbook at Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

Fans - who are known as 'beliebers' - defended the 19-year-old, while a museum spokeswoman sought to play down any controversy caused by his remarks.

Bieber wrote: "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."

The Anne Frank Museum wrote about the visit in posts to its Facebook page , prompting a series of accusations over Bieber's perceived insensitivity.

But museum spokeswoman Maatje Mostart said the museum was happy to receive the singer and did not see anything offensive in his remarks.

Ms Mostart said he had called ahead and was given a guided tour. The Buzzfeed website later reported that a tour guide at the museum had pointed out that Anne was a fan of pop culture and may have been a fan of his.

Media commentators and some Twitter users expressed displeasure at the comment.

Comedian Ricky Gervais posted on his Twitter account: "I agree with Justin Bieber. Anne Frank would've loved his stuff. It's perfect for being played really really quietly so no one can hear it."

Scott Simon, host of US-based National Public Radio, said on Twitter: "Anne would be wise enough to just laugh."

Others commended Bieber for caring enough about Anne's story to visit the Amsterdam museum, which is built into the house where she and her family hid before their arrest.

Anne, who died at the age of 15 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, is one of the most well-known and celebrated Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

First published in 1947, her diary has been read by millions across the world and details the deprivations and personal triumphs she and her family experienced in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

Glee School Show Apparence Upon ALL OF US TELEVISION

An episode of hit TV show Glee revolving around a school shooting has provoked mixed reactions from families and critics.

'Shooting Star' went out in the US on April 11 and showed students hiding in fear after hearing gun shots during singing practice.

During tense scenes choirmaster Will Schuester, played by Matthew Morrison, tells teenagers to tweet and text to spread news of the 'intruder'.

Another scene shows students recording messages for their loved ones.

Despite the storyline eventually revealing a false alarm, some residents of Newtown - where the Sandy Hook shootings took place - believe the episode was ill-timed.

Andrew Paley, whose twin sons survived the school massacre that killed 26, wrote that it was "too soon" and said that producers should have got in touch.

"Our kids and our own wounds are still too new," he posted on the Newtown Action Alliance Facebook page.

"The producers should be ashamed to not think of us and how we'd feel if we just happened to be watching ... they should have given Newtown a heads up."

Local paper The Newtown Bee also said the episode was likely to be "a little much for some residents to stomach".

But Anthony Lusardi - whose girlfriend Lauren Rousseau, a teacher, died in the shootings - gave his support to the show.

Actor Cory Monteith, creator Ryan Murphy and actor Matthew Morrison Actor Matthew Morrison (right) plays Glee choirmaster Will Schuester

"As long as it keeps the subject in the public's mind I'm all for it," he said. "My Lauren was a huge fan of the show. So I'm sure she would have approved."

The gun shots in the controversial episode turn out to be a false alarm and a flashback scene later reveals cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) confiscating a gun from a pupil, which accidentally fires.

Producers also prefaced the episode with a warning: "This episode of 'Glee' addresses the topic of school violence. Viewer discretion is advised."

Glee creator Ryan Murphy praised the cast on Twitter in the days running up to the broadcast, calling it "the most powerful emotional Glee ever".

But television critics were split on the merits of the episode.

The New York Daily News said it had the "unsettling feel of exploitation", while Billboard cautiously praised a "new feat" for the show's cast in tackling the issue.

The award-winning show, featuring a high school Glee club regularly bursting into song, has been a big hit for Fox since it began in 2009 and regularly tackles sensitive topics like sexuality, religion and domestic violence.

Kardashian's Ex lover The No-Show In Court

Kim Kardashian has attended a settlement hearing in her divorce case from professional basketball player Kris Humphries, but Humphries was nowhere to be seen.

Celebrity website TMZ reports Kardashian's estranged husband did not attend the mandatory meeting in Los Angeles on Friday morning.

The reality TV star, who is expecting a baby with boyfriend Kanye West, is seeking a divorce from Humphries after their 72-day marriage in 2011.

Humphries has contested Kardashian's divorce filing, instead asking the marriage to be annulled based on fraud.

The NBA star has not yet laid out his case for claiming fraud.

Friday's hearing would have marked the first time the pair had seen each other since their October 2011 split, TMZ reports.

It is unclear why Humphries did not attend or what that might mean for the case.

A Night Of Style & Glamour To Welcome Newlyweds Kim Kardashian And Kris Humphries - ArrivalsThe couple separated after 72 days of marriage

A trial is scheduled to begin on May 6 if the parties cannot reach a settlement first.

Kardashian and Humphries are both expected to testify at a trial, which would focus on whether parts of their courtship and marriage were staged for the reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Their whirlwind romance played out largely in front of the cameras.

The two were wed in August 2011 in a ceremony filmed and later aired as a two-hour special programme.

Kardashian, along with her two sisters, star in a number of reality shows based on their lives as entrepreneurs.

They are the daughters of the late attorney Robert Kardashian - who famously represented OJ Simpson in his 1995 murder trial - and business manager Kris Jenner.

Jenner is married to US Olympic gold medallist Bruce Jenner.

FW: Malawi: Madonna 'Demanded Special Treatment'

Subject: Malawi: Madonna 'Demanded Special Treatment'

Malawi's government has launched a scathing attack on Madonna, accusing her of demanding special treatment and exaggerating her contributions to the country during a tour last week.

The pop star has visited the southern African nation several times since 2006 and runs several projects there after adopting two children.

But her latest trip has raised the ire of President Joyce Banda's government, which claimed she had "demanded state attention" - unlike other international figures the country has hosted, such as footballers Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville.

"Granted, Madonna is a famed international musician. But that does not impose an injunction of obligation on any government under whose territory Madonna finds herself, including Malawi, to give her state treatment," the president's office said.

"Such treatment, even if she deserved it, is discretionary not obligatory."

On previous trips, Madonna has received numerous privileges, but during the latest visit she was reportedly denied use of the VIP section at the airport

Madonna Visits Malawi With Adopted ChildrenMadonna says she has paid for 10 schools to be built in Malawi

The government also questioned Madonna's intentions with her humanitarian efforts in Malawi, alleging that the singer "wants Malawi to be forever chained to the obligation of gratitude".

"Kindness, as far as its ordinary meaning is concerned, is free and anonymous. If it can't be free and silent, it is not kindness; it is something else. Blackmail is the closest it becomes," the statement said.

A spokesman for Madonna said claims that the singer had requested special treatment were "nonsense".

Madonna herself said she was "saddened" that President Banda had "chosen to release lies about what we've accomplished, my intentions, how I personally conducted myself while visiting Malawi and other untruths."

She said: "I have no intentions of being distracted by these ridiculous allegations.

"I came to Malawi seven years ago with honourable intentions.

Rio Ferdinand, David James, Gary Neville in Malawi in 2005.Ferdinand and other players won praise for their 2005 visit, above

"I returned earlier this month to view the new schools we built. I did not ever ask or demand special treatment at the airport or elsewhere during my visit. I will not be distracted or discouraged by other people's political agendas.

"I made a promise to the children of Malawi and I am keeping that promise."

Trevor Neilson, whose Global Philanthropy Group is managing Madonna's projects in Malawi, said: "Obviously these attacks are influenced by the fact that the president's sister was removed as the head of Madonna's organisation in Malawi due to concerns about mismanagement of $3.8m (£2.5m).

"As the largest private philanthropist to Malawi we would think that the government would be pleased that she is giving her time and money to one of the poorest countries in the world."

However, the statement from the president's office dismissed the claim that Ms Banda was angry because Anjimile Mtila-Oponyo had been fired as the CEO of the Raising Malawi charity.

The charity was to have built a $15m (£9.8m) academy for girls but the project was dropped because of the concerns, with Madonna saying instead she would build community schools.

Last week, Ms Banda reacted angrily to Madonna's claim to have built 10 schools in Malawi.

"Where are the 10 schools she has built? She is just building school blocks at already existing schools. In some cases she just renovated an already existing block. This is an insult to the people of Malawi. She can't be lying to the world at our expense," she said.

Subject: Charlie Brown Star Pleads Guilty To Stalking

The man who provided the voice of Charlie Brown of Peanuts fame has pleaded guilty to stalking charges.

Peter Robbins admitted threatening and stalking both his ex-girlfriend and a plastic surgeon who gave her a breast enhancement he paid for.

San Diego's City News Service said the 56-year-old entered the plea in court on Wednesday and could get up to three years in prison at his sentencing next month.

Robbins makes a face during his arraignment in San DiegoPeter Robbins in a Californian court in January, 2013

Prosecutors said Robbins called his former girlfriend dozens of times a day and told her he would kill her and her son if she did not give back his dog and car.

They said he made similar threats and demanded a refund from the plastic surgeon.

The court heard that Robbins had called the plastic surgeon so many times, she was forced to move to a hotel temporarily, out of fear for her life.

She also hired an armed guard to stand outside her clinic.

Robbins voiced the title character in 1965's A Charlie Brown Christmas and 1966's It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

The Peanuts comic strip, which was written and illustrated by Charles M Schulz, ran from 1950 to 2000, and at its peak was read by 355 million people in 75 countries.
